When I was given a copy of Red moon bayonets debut E.P to listen to I was shocked to discover that the band have only been together a few short months. Their songs have a depth and maturity to them that is more akin to a band who have worked together for years. The band was formed earlier this year by members Vinnie Flynn and Kenneth Tomney, their vision was to create driving melodic songs by mixing the styles of alternative rock, blues and indie. Drummer Igor Sim was the last to join the band, he brought with him his own original style and when he joined the line-up was complete.
Although their E.P is only four songs long they cover an array of styles and leave the listener wanting more. Opening track Love of mine instantly made me think of early Queens of the stone age. However singer Vinnie’s voice is more comparable to a deeper voiced Matt Bellamy than to Josh Homme. Despite my comparison I think that the song is a winner in its own right. Fast paced, catchy riffs, soaring vocals, I loved it from start to finish. I haven’t been able to get it out of my head and it’s by far my favourite song from the E.P.
The lovers that died is a much slower paced and darker song. The songs main focus is the haunting vocals and accompanying guitar, and it is stripped back so that it keeps the focus where it’s meant to be. It shows off their mature and darker side, and it is the polar opposite to the other dance friendly tunes on the E.P. With the next song they completely change gear. The slow mile is upbeat, cheery and provides a great lift after the dark and brooding The lovers that died. The slow mile showcases their blues side brilliantly and shows that they can switch between styles and still create something that remains true to their own sound. Row carries on where The slow mile left off. It is even more upbeat and the pace builds and builds until it reaches a crescendo of sound to signify the end of the E.P. I liked every song on this E.P and I can’t wait to hear more from these guys.
Red Moon Bayonets will be launching their self titled E.P in Tower Records on the 23rd of August 2012 at 5.30 pm. I really advise heading down and checking these guys out!
